AMN Reviews: Alphaxone – Interdimensional (2024; Cryo Chamber)

Alphaxone (Mehdi Saleh) returns with an engaging album of deep space ambient music. Heavy and unbroken drones are accompanied by breathy passages as well as fluttering, crackling, and other effects in the background. The dynamism is hidden among static elements.

Over a wide range of frequencies, Interdimensional pulses and throbs. Its nine tracks are each 6-9 minutes long, making their ponderous statements and then moving on. Despite the focused sound palette of these pieces, there are variations. Quantum Evo is melodic, with hissing atmospherics. Starfields is airy with echoing percussives and minimalistic repetitions of short motifs. Interspersed with darker, textual pieces, these moments of relative lightness stand out.

But at its core, Interdimensional is an immersive slab of soundscapes that employ dense ethereal structures with a mix of chording and synthetic sounds. This otherworldliness is tempered by its strangely relatable nature, resulting in an offering that is ripe for introspective listening.
