AMN Reviews: Lilac Numbering System – Distance Drone (2023; Bandcamp)

We know very little about this artist, aside from that they are from Austin, Texas. This EP-length offering is a single 19-minute track described as “heavy acoustic guitar drones interspersed with radio static.” Without these liner notes, I would have assumed that the guitars were electric and that a touch of keyboards was added deep into the mix.

Be that as it may, Distance Drone consists of gritty looped textures that slowly evolve throughout the track. The tone is dark and unsettling. Like many releases of this ilk, there is a dynamism that underlies what might initially appear to be a uniform wall of noise. Where Lilac Numbering System stands out is with this attention to detail. Very nicely done.
