AMN Reviews: Tomas Fujiwara – Pith (2023; Out of Your Head Records)

From time to time, the trio of drummer Tomas Fujiwara. cellist Tomeka Reid, and vibraphonist Patricia Brennan might come close to convincing you that Pith is a semi-conventional jazz recording. But then, they will spend a few minutes on a track that is both outside and yet somehow understated. This contrast is apparent on Josho, which has a walking line from Reid and is replete with Fujiwara’s snare and cymbals. Reid goes on to solo over melodies from Brennan.

But it is followed by Other, a group composition that is jagged yet structured. Fujiwara performs with quiet poise while Reid’s bowing appears to be largely improvised as it pushes boundaries. Brennan is relentlessly busy, making this group sound bigger than a trio.

If you have appreciated these musicians’ past works, you will find a lot to like here. The album comes out on September 15 from Out of Your Head Records.
