AMN Reviews: Aniello Perduto – Cade la Neve Sovrana, Vicina è la Stella Lontana [Setola di Maiale SM4660]

The poetically titled Cade la Neve Sovrana, Vicina è la Stella Lontana – The Sovereign Snow Falls, the Distant Star is Near – is the first solo album from Bolognese multi-instrumentalist Roberto Di Blasio, working under the name Aniello Perduto. The album contains sixteen short, composed pieces featuring Di Blasio on overdubbed alto and/or soprano saxophones and drum kit. Di Blasio’s compositions tend toward the cellular, each one of which is organized around a limited number of discrete and rhythmically driving, angular motifs played on saxophone and moving in unison with the drums. On most of the tracks Di Blasio harmonizes his melodic cells by overlaying both saxophones, although a handful are arranged for drums and a single horn alone. The playing is tight, and the drumming in particular is energetic.
