Andrew Byrne (b. 1966) has lived and worked mostly in New York since the early 1990s. This tripartite CD has a mobile-like character, working entirely with a fabric of piano and metal percussion in changing manners and images, all of them remote from the duo relationship of conventional chamber music. The central work Tracks is also the earliest one (composed 1998, revised 2006), and presents the solo piano in its most ‘normal’ sound and interaction with the player—a kind of journey, as the title suggests, within a den…

The State of Modern Classical Labels

NewMusicBox features an article (and this is part 2 of a 3 parter) about the economics and focus of indie classical labels in a post-CD world.

Given that thousands of new CD titles are produced every year across the span of musical genres, it’s not hard to surmise that most discs don’t earn back enough funds to recoup the costs of recording and manufacturing. In other words, it can’t be just classical and contemporary music projects that have modest sales.

It’s a given: money has to come from somewhere before discs get released. It’s just that the need for dough is more on the surface in all realms of the always-struggling little realm of contemporary American music.

How to generalize a 36-piece, eight-hour sweep? Much of the program seemed compositionally less concerned with advocating particular vocabularies (tonal/atonal) or concepts (minimalism/serialism) than with exploring the means of production, the various orthodox and unorthodox ways instruments can make noise. Results were often mobile-like, artfully arranged rather than intensely plotted. Flutist Ashley Addington and guitarist Mark Wilson deftly placed the stop-and-go Impressionism of Toru Takemitsu’s “Toward the Sea.’’ Karlheinz Stockhausen’s “Refrain’’ uses the decay of vibraphone, celesta, and piano (John Andress, Christopher Lim, and Stephen Olsen) to chart loose, ringing constellations. Lukas Foss’s “Ni bruit ni vitesse’’ explores the far reaches of two pianos – Lim and Leah Kosch at the keyboards, percussionists Victoria Aschheim and Masako Kunimoto working inside the instruments’ cases – and the combination of clanging, buzzing, and slow-rolling scales was mysterious and magical.

Blue Sabbath Black Cheer – Crows Eat The Eyes From The Leviathans Carcass
Blue Sabbath Black Cheer started making their murderous and sleazy mix of blacked noise, grim power electronics & sicken clanking ambience back in 2005 & have racking up so far an impressive 30 plus release taking in cdr’s, tapes, split’s and ltd vinyl pressing- the wonderfully titled Crows Eat The Eyes From The Leviathans Carcass is their first proper cd releases.

Torben Snekkestad – Conic Folded
The Norwegian jazz scene since very long has proven to be one to be reckoned with as well as being a typical addition to the worldwide jazz canon. Conic Folded by saxophoneplayer Torben Snekkestad is yet another record to confirm this.

Outward Bound – n/t
Likely to be named after Eric Dolphy‘s album of the name Outward Bound this Greek duo Outward Bound takes a different, more ambient approach. A bit different from what we’re used to from Triple Bath as well, more traditional and less experimental.

Jim O’Rourke – I’m Happy and I’m Singing and 1,2,3,4
This is a reissue of Jim O’Rourke’s classic ‘laptop’ album which offers up the original masterpiece of felt and creative laptop manipulations along with an second equal marvellous disk of unreleased laptop material.

Nate Young – Regression
Regression is the new solo album from Wolf eyes founding member Nate Young and it finds him offering up seven tracks of grim and analogue bound Sonics that for the most part stay away from noisy territory and focus more on horrify and bleak mood setting vibe.

The Gowanus Recordings are meant to extend the reach of Free Jazz by incorporating classical and scientific ideas, while enlightening the listener.
