Avant-garde Edgefest draws national names

saxophonist Roscoe Mitchell at the Pomigliano ...
Image via Wikipedia

The Detroit Free Press previews this weekend’s Edgefest.

Leading the way is the 13th annual Edgefest, the Ann Arbor-based festival of avant-garde jazz produced by the Kerrytown Concert House. With about 20 performances spread over four days and a lineup deep with national figures, Edgefest is one of the country’s premier showcases of left-of-center improvised music and an indispensible gift of local musical life.

The 2009 theme, “Reeds of Change,” promises a heavy dose of saxophonists and other reed players. Highlights include:

• Gravitas Quartet: An intriguing group with pianist Wayne Horvitz, trumpeter Ron Miles, bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and cellist Peggy Lee. 8 p.m. Friday.

• 4 Altos: A saxophone quartet with four compelling improvisers — Marty Ehrlich, Ned Rothenberg, Michael Attias and Andrew Laster. 10 p.m. Friday.

• Yuganaut with Roscoe Mitchell: A collectivist trio welcomes Mitchell, a titanic figure in the history of free jazz and a poet of sound and silence. 4 p.m. Saturday.

• Brad Shepik’s “Human Activity Suite”: The drummer and composer presents a new extended composition responding to climate change. With Ralph Alessi, Gary Versace, Drew Gress and Tom Rainey. 7 p.m. Saturday.

Bohemian in Exile Shows

From Detroit’s Bohemian folks:

Monday Sept 28th: Evan Parker/Ned Rothenberg Duo at 2739 Edwin
A leader of the American avant garde joins a leader of the European avant garde in a duo for winds that features free improvised music with a startling level of interplay.

British saxophonist Evan Parker is a pivotal figure in the development of European improvised music. Along with his early collaborator, guitarist Derek Bailey, he pioneered a new approach to free playing that moved away from a jazz based vocabulary. Their work in the mid-sixties was intended to be non-idiomatic, but both musicians had such distinct musical voices that they couldn’t help becoming an idiom unto themselves! Parker has worked with Cecil Taylor, Peter Brotzmann, Tony Oxley, Anthony Braxton et al., as well as more pop related performers like Spitirtualized, Spring Heel Jack and Robert Wyatt.

New Yorker Ned Rothenberg plays a variety of wind instruments, including alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet and Shakuhachi. Involved with the ‘downtown scene’- performing with folks like John Zorn, Tom Cora and Marc Ribot– Rothenberg is also internationally-minded in his collaborations, which have included Tuvan throat singers and South Korean musicians.

Doors at 8 pm, music at 8:20. Located at 2739 Edwin, just off Jos Campau in Hamtramck. $10 suggested minimum donation. Please note, there is free parking behind 2739 Edwin, accessed by the alley along side the building. Please park there (if possible) to lower the impact on the neighbors. Thanks

Coming Soon:
10/2 Digital Primitives (Cooper Moore, Assif Tsahar, Chad Taylor) at 2739 Edwin
10/22 Jason Stein
11/4 Plastic Crime Wave, Kat Hernandez Duo

Evan Parker: Making Music From Music

Evan Parker’s upcoming Chicago show is previewed in the Reader:

Evan Parker & Ned Rothenberg
Sun 9/27, 3 PM, Claudia Cassidy Theater, Chicago Cultural Center, 78 E. Washington, 312-744-6630.

British saxophonist Evan Parker, who plays a free concert with reedist Ned Rothenberg on Sunday at the Chicago Cultural Center, is one of the most instantly recognizable improvisers in the world. He’s developed an idiosyncratic vocabulary distinguished by mastery of circular breathing and polyphonics, and throughout a career spanning more than four decades he’s stayed open to new ideas. A committed sonic explorer, he’s had a dizzying variety of collaborators—he’s made pioneering music with the likes of Derek Bailey and Peter Brötzmann and he’s played in a swing band with Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.

Jazz Listings From The NY Times

From NYTimes.com:

GRAY-ESKELIN-BALLOU-FORMANEK (Saturday) In the early set of this left-of-center performance, at 8 p.m., the pianist Frank Carlberg engages with the rhythm section of Michael Formanek on bass and Devin Gray on drums. Then at 9, the same rhythm section backs a front line consisting of the saxophonist Ellery Eskelin and the trumpeter Dave Ballou. Douglass Street Music Collective, 295 Douglass Street, near Third Avenue, Gowanus, Brooklyn , myspace.com/295douglass; $10 suggested donation. (Chinen)20090730

? ETHAN IVERSON, REID ANDERSON, PAUL MOTIAN (Friday through Sunday) Mr. Iverson, an acutely contemporary pianist, and Mr. Anderson, a warmly decisive bassist, make up two-thirds of the Bad Plus. Their output here — with the master drummer Paul Motian, a slippery influence on both — should suggest a similar full-tilt musical engagement, but perhaps with less steely certainty and more unanswerable questions. At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village , (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; cover, $25, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)20090730

DONNY MCCASLIN GROUP (Thursday) On his recent albums Donny McCaslin has applied his assertive tenor saxophone style to Latin American-inspired fusions. He does that here, in a free lunchtime concert, with expert help: the guitarist Lage Lund, the bassist Hans Glawischnig and the drummer Adam Cruz. From 12:30 to 1:45 p.m., Plaza at St. Peter’s Lutheran Church, Lexington Avenue at 54th Street , (212) 935-2200, saintpeters.org/jazz; free. (Chinen)20090730

? MOSTLY OTHER PEOPLE DO THE KILLING (Sunday) Led by the bassist Moppa Elliott, this prankishly named free-bop quartet has a fairly serious recent record called “This Is Our Moosic” (Hot Cup), featuring impressive contributions from the trumpeter Peter Evans and the alto saxophonist Jon Irabagon. The group appears here as part of the Freestyle Music Series; its 8:30 p.m. set arrives sandwiched between an equally boisterous free-jazz collective (at 7) and a band called Attention Screen (at 10). Local 269, 269 East Houston Street, at Suffolk Street, Lower East Side , (212) 228-9874, myspace.com/deepopnyc; $5. (Chinen)20090730

? NED ROTHENBERG’S SYNC/HARRIS EISENSTADT’S WOODBLOCK PRINTS (Friday) Ned Rothenberg is a saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer with a penchant for insistent frictions. He appears here with Sync, his East-Asian-inspired ensemble with Jerome Harris on acoustic bass guitar and Samir Chatterjee on hand percussion. Sharing the bill is a chamberlike group called Woodblock Prints, a nonet led by the drummer Harris Eisenstadt that also includes Mr. Rothenberg and Mr. Harris. At 8 p.m., Drom, 85 Avenue A, at Fifth Street, East Village , (212) 777-1157, dromnyc.com; $10 in advance; $12 at the door. (Chinen)20090730

? JENNY SCHEINMAN’S MISCHIEF AND MAYHEM (Tuesday) Ms. Scheinman often goes for rustic charm as a violinist, but she never ceases to be an adventurous improviser. Her partners in this enticingly named band, first formed a couple of years ago, are the engagingly prickly guitarist Nels Cline, the stalwart bassist Matt Penman and the polymorphically propulsive drummer Jim Black. At 7 p.m., Le Poisson Rouge, 158 Bleecker Street, near Thompson Street, Greenwich Village , (212) 505-3474, lepoissonrouge.com; $15 in advance; $17 at the door. (Chinen)20090730

SIM FACULTY CONCERT (Wednesday) The School for Improvised Music is a nonprofit enterprise in which the instructors are adventurous and communicative musicians. Among them are this concert’s featured guests: the saxophonist Ravi Coltrane, the trumpeter Ralph Alessi, the pianist Andy Milne, the bassist Drew Gress and the drummer Gerald Cleaver. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village , (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; $15; $10 for members and students. (Chinen)20090730

SKM TRIO (Friday) With an acronym derived from the first names of its members, this collective features smart musicians comfortable with free improvisation: the saxophonist Stephen Gauci, the pianist Kris Davis and the bassist Michael Bisio. At 8 p.m., 5C Cultural Center, 68 Avenue C, at East Fifth Street, East Village , (212) 477-5993, 5ccc.com; cover, $10, with a $5 minimum. (Chinen)20090730

? TRIO 3 WITH GERI ALLEN (Wednesday and Thursday) Never mind the redundancy in the title, or the fact that this avant-garde collective actually works here as a quartet. The alto saxophonist Oliver Lake, the bassist Reggie Workman and the drummer Andrew Cyrille are battle-ready teammates; they stand only to gain from the addition of the pianist Geri Allen, as they recently proved on an album called “At This Time” (Intakt). (Through Aug. 8.) At 8:30 and 11 p.m., Birdland, 315 West 44th Street, Clinton , (212) 581-3080, birdlandjazz.com; $30 for general admission; $40 for premium seating; and a $10 minimum. (Chinen)

Jazz Listings from the New York Times

Lots going on in New York this week.

RASHIED ALI QUINTET (Sunday) Rashied Ali has had a substantial career in the jazz avant-garde, beginning with his role in the late-period bands of John Coltrane. But hard bop is the foundation for this quintet, with a front line of the trumpeter Josh Evans and the tenor saxophonist Lawrence Clark. At 7:30 and 9:30 p.m., Jazz Standard, 116 East 27th Street, Manhattan, (212) 576-2232, jazzstandard.net; cover, $25.

GO: ORGANIC ORCHESTRA (Monday) This meditative large ensemble, scheduled to perform at Roulette for the next three Monday nights, is a project of the open-minded percussionist, composer and conductor Adam Rudolph. Drawing inspiration from earthy and elemental sources, it features changeable layers of woodwinds, strings, percussion and guitars. At 8:30 p.m., Roulette at Location One, 20 Greene Street, at Grand Street, SoHo, (212) 219-8242, roulette.org; $15; $10 for students, 60+ and those 30 and younger. (Chinen)

JON HASSELL AND THE MAARIFA STREET BAND (Tuesday) On his first United States tour in more than 20 years, the trumpeter-composer Jon Hassell recreates the meditative glow of his new album, “Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street” (ECM). To help conjure his various fusions onstage, he enlists his Maarifa Street Band, with Kheir-Eddine M’Kachiche on violin, Jan Bang and J. A. Deane on electronics, and Peter Freeman on bass and programming. At 8:30 p.m., Zankel Hall, Carnegie Hall, (212) 247-7800, carnegiehall.org; $35 to $45. (Chinen)

L’IMAGE (Thursday) This all but forgotten funk-fusion group of the 1970s recently reunited in the studio, bringing a lot more collective experience to the table. Its lineup consists of the vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, the keyboardist Warren Bernhardt, the guitarist David Spinozza, the bassist Tony Levin and the drummer Steve Gadd. (Through Feb. 15.) At 8:30 and 10:30 p.m., Iridium, 1650 Broadway, at 51st Street, (212) 582-2121, iridiumjazzclub.com; cover, $35, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)

PAUL MOTIAN TRIO 3 IN 1 (Tuesday through Thursday) Paul Motian is drawn to melody as a drummer, composer and bandleader, but he also harbors a fondness for indeterminacy. In this configuration he features an instinctive melodist, the saxophonist Chris Potter, and an incorrigible abstractionist, the pianist Jason Moran. Because he has recent history with each of them, and because everyone involved is an active listener, the results should suggest something other than an earnest collision. (Through Feb. 15.) At 9 and 11 p.m., Village Vanguard, 178 Seventh Avenue South, at 11th Street, West Village, (212) 255-4037, villagevanguard.com; cover, $20, with a $10 minimum. (Chinen)

NED ROTHENBERG AND INNER DIASPORA (Friday) Ned Rothenberg is a saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer with a penchant for insistent frictions. He draws here from a recent texture-rich album called “Inner Diaspora” (Tzadik), with vital help from Mark Feldman on violin, Erik Friedlander on cello, Samir Chatterjee on tabla, and Jerome Harris on acoustic guitars. At 8:30 p.m., Union Temple, 17 Eastern Parkway, near Grand Army Plaza, Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, (718) 638-7600, uniontemple.org; free. (Chinen)

CHRIS SCHLARB (Saturday) Mr. Schlarb, a guitarist best recognized (in some parts, anyway) as half of the drone-crazy duo I Heart Lung, has an atmospheric new solo effort called “Twilight & Ghost Stories” (Asthmatic Kitty), organized as a suite and featuring more than two dozen improvisers. Each of these two sets will span the entire work, with contributions from Tom Abbs on bass and didgeridoo, Katherine Young on bassoon and accordion, and Mick Rossi on piano, among others. At 8 and 10 p.m., the Stone, Avenue C and Second Street, East Village, thestonenyc.com; cover, $10 per set. (Chinen)

SEARCH AND RESTORE (Friday and Saturday) The promoters behind this left-leaning concert series are unveiling their new Web site, searchandrestore.com, with all appropriate fanfare: on Friday they present Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society, a postmodern big band, and on Saturday they feature Now vs. Now, a rhythmically assertive trio led by the pianist Jason Lindner. At 9 and 10:30 p.m., Jazz Gallery, 290 Hudson Street, at Spring Street, South Village, (212) 242-1063, jazzgallery.org; cover, $15; $10 for members.
