The purpose of this event is to support Arts for Art’s community-building initiatives to strengthen the presence of innovative music and art in the LES. This “marathon” of music and arts, is a real First. It will explore new and exciting ways of connecting ‘performance’ with ‘audience interaction’ and ‘youth participation’. Arts For Art with the passion of its convictions, has created an opportunity for the art, local business and civil community to come together. Avant-garde Edgefest draws national names

The Detroit Free Press previews this weekend’s Edgefest.

Leading the way is the 13th annual Edgefest, the Ann Arbor-based festival of avant-garde jazz produced by the Kerrytown Concert House. With about 20 performances spread over four days and a lineup deep with national figures, Edgefest is one of the country’s premier showcases of left-of-center improvised music and an indispensible gift of local musical life.

The 2009 theme, “Reeds of Change,” promises a heavy dose of saxophonists and other reed players. Highlights include:

• Gravitas Quartet: An intriguing group with pianist Wayne Horvitz, trumpeter Ron Miles, bassoonist Sara Schoenbeck and cellist Peggy Lee. 8 p.m. Friday.

• 4 Altos: A saxophone quartet with four compelling improvisers — Marty Ehrlich, Ned Rothenberg, Michael Attias and Andrew Laster. 10 p.m. Friday.

• Yuganaut with Roscoe Mitchell: A collectivist trio welcomes Mitchell, a titanic figure in the history of free jazz and a poet of sound and silence. 4 p.m. Saturday.

• Brad Shepik’s “Human Activity Suite”: The drummer and composer presents a new extended composition responding to climate change. With Ralph Alessi, Gary Versace, Drew Gress and Tom Rainey. 7 p.m. Saturday.

Monday Sept 28th: Evan Parker/Ned Rothenberg Duo at 2739 Edwin
A leader of the American avant garde joins a leader of the European avant garde in a duo for winds that features free improvised music with a startling level of interplay.

British saxophonist Evan Parker is a pivotal figure in the development of European improvised music. Along with his early collaborator, guitarist Derek Bailey, he pioneered a new approach to free playing that moved away from a jazz based vocabulary. Their work in the mid-sixties was intended to be non-idiomatic, but both musicians had such distinct musical voices that they couldn’t help becoming an idiom unto themselves! Parker has worked with Cecil Taylor, Peter Brotzmann, Tony Oxley, Anthony Braxton et al., as well as more pop related performers like Spitirtualized, Spring Heel Jack and Robert Wyatt.

New Yorker Ned Rothenberg plays a variety of wind instruments, including alto saxophone, clarinet, bass clarinet and Shakuhachi. Involved with the ‘downtown scene’- performing with folks like John Zorn, Tom Cora and Marc Ribot– Rothenberg is also internationally-minded in his collaborations, which have included Tuvan throat singers and South Korean musicians.

British saxophonist Evan Parker, who plays a free concert with reedist Ned Rothenberg on Sunday at the Chicago Cultural Center, is one of the most instantly recognizable improvisers in the world. He’s developed an idiosyncratic vocabulary distinguished by mastery of circular breathing and polyphonics, and throughout a career spanning more than four decades he’s stayed open to new ideas. A committed sonic explorer, he’s had a dizzying variety of collaborators—he’s made pioneering music with the likes of Derek Bailey and Peter Brötzmann and he’s played in a swing band with Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts.

The innovative four hand piano duet ALO (the Latin word meaning to nourish, cherish, support, and sustain) is a collaborative project between long time friends Jesse Elder and Aya Nishina. ALO focuses on generating a new repertoire for 4 hand piano duo through improvisations, compositions and arrangements. The duo will be creating a radical sound sculpture together with live electronics by the great James Brendan Adamson and with woodwindist Ned Rothenberg as part of their program.

RASHIED ALI QUINTET (Sunday) Rashied Ali has had a substantial career in the jazz avant-garde, beginning with his role in the late-period bands of John Coltrane. But hard bop is the foundation for this quintet, with a front line of the trumpeter Josh Evans and the tenor saxophonist Lawrence Clark. GO: ORGANIC ORCHESTRA (Monday) This meditative large ensemble, scheduled to perform at Roulette for the next three Monday nights, is a project of the open-minded percussionist, composer and conductor Adam Rudolph. Drawing inspiration from earthy and elemental sources, it features changeable layers of woodwinds, strings, percussion and guitars. JON HASSELL AND THE MAARIFA STREET BAND (Tuesday) On his first United States tour in more than 20 years, the trumpeter-composer Jon Hassell recreates the meditative glow of his new album, “Last Night the Moon Came Dropping Its Clothes in the Street” (ECM). To help conjure his various fusions onstage, he enlists his Maarifa Street Band, with Kheir-Eddine M’Kachiche on violin, Jan Bang and J. A. L’IMAGE (Thursday) This all but forgotten funk-fusion group of the 1970s recently reunited in the studio, bringing a lot more collective experience to the table. Its lineup consists of the vibraphonist Mike Mainieri, the keyboardist Warren Bernhardt, the guitarist David Spinozza, the bassist Tony Levin and the drummer Steve Gadd. (Through Feb. 15.) PAUL MOTIAN TRIO 3 IN 1 (Tuesday through Thursday) Paul Motian is drawn to melody as a drummer, composer and bandleader, but he also harbors a fondness for indeterminacy. In this configuration he features an instinctive melodist, the saxophonist Chris Potter, and an incorrigible abstractionist, the pianist Jason Moran. Because he has recent history with each of them, and because everyone involved is an active listener, the results should suggest something other than an earnest collision. (Through Feb. 15.) NED ROTHENBERG AND INNER DIASPORA (Friday) Ned Rothenberg is a saxophonist, clarinetist, flutist and composer with a penchant for insistent frictions. He draws here from a recent texture-rich album called “Inner Diaspora” (Tzadik), with vital help from Mark Feldman on violin, Erik Friedlander on cello, Samir Chatterjee on tabla, and Jerome Harris on acoustic guitars. CHRIS SCHLARB (Saturday) Mr. Schlarb, a guitarist best recognized (in some parts, anyway) as half of the drone-crazy duo I Heart Lung, has an atmospheric new solo effort called “Twilight & Ghost Stories” (Asthmatic Kitty), organized as a suite and featuring more than two dozen improvisers. Each of these two sets will span the entire work, with contributions from Tom Abbs on bass and didgeridoo, Katherine Young on bassoon and accordion, and Mick Rossi on piano, among others.
