You Won’t Find These Poisson Rouge Performers in the 45s Section

From NYTimes.com:

At the early concert, Rachel Grimes, a pianist and composer who writes in a charming if lightweight Impressionistic style, played the 14 vignettes from her recent “Book of Leaves” disc on a split bill with the new-music pianist Sarah Cahill. Ms. Cahill performed selections from “A Sweeter Music,” a series that brings together new works about war and peace and will no doubt become a recording.

The late show was a collaboration between the cellist Matt Haimovitz and the composer Du Yun. They played most of Mr. Haimovitz’s new recording, “Figment,” a challenging collection of harmonically and rhythmically complex works by Elliott Carter, Ana Sokolovic, Luna Pearl Woolf, Steven Stucky, Gilles Tremblay and Ms. Du, linked here by quirky improvisations in which Ms. Du provided electronic sound and spoken texts.

Eli Keszler Live at the Mills Gallery by Rare Frequency.
Multi-instrumentalist Eli Keszler is one of a coterie of exciting new Boston-based musicians whose music pushes the boundaries of noise, drones, improv, and electro-acoustic composition. Using a variety of percussion instruments, as well as guitar and electronics, Eli creates intense drones and fast, rhythmically complex pieces. In addition to his solo work, he currently plays in a number of ensembles including a new trio with keyboardist Anthony Coleman and reed-player/vocalist Ashley Paul, a duo with guitarist Geoff Mullen, and a longstanding partnership with fellow multi-instrumentalist Steve Pyne called Red Horse. He has a pair of CDs out on REL, both of which showcase his extraordinarily dynamic playing.

9pm
Hans Tammen “Endangered Guitar” (ESP 4031)
http://www.tammen.org/

In hundreds of solo performances since 1993, Hans Tammen has explored the sounds of concert halls and small clubs with an assortment of mechanical contrivances applied to his modified “endangered” guitars, interactive software programming, and stereo and multichannel sound systems. His music has been described as an alien world of bizarre textures and a journey through the land of unending sonic operations.

His instrument is a hybrid between a guitar and a computer, designed to react with the resonant frequencies of the room. It constantly records his sounds, and the information from the analysis of these sounds and the playing determines a wide variety of processes. This makes every performance a site-specific one, bringing the sonic qualities of the surrounding conditions to the listener’s attention.

Blarvuster and Electric Kulintang at the Kitchen

Susie Ibarra

From NY’s Kitchen performance space.

On Thursday and Friday, September 17 and 18, The Kitchen opens its fall performance season with a concert of live music featuring Matthew Welch’s Blarvuster and Electric Kulintang with Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez. This double-bill of composer-driven “band-sembles” reveals two approaches to the fusion of experimental and folk formulas, drawing heavily upon Eastern traditions and the sensibilities of storytelling to weave magical musical textures. Curated by Nick Hallett, the performances will take place at 8:00 P.M. at The Kitchen (512 West 19th Street). Tickets are $12.

Blarvuster is the “border-busting” sextet convened by composer Matthew Welch to play his original compositions, which connect the driving pulse of post-minimalism and rock to dynamic Balinese vocal melodies and rhythms. The ensemble features Leah Paul (flutes), Max Mandel (viola), Mary Halvorson (guitar), Ian Riggs (bass) and Tomas Fujiwara (drums), while Welch helms with virtuosity, alternating between the Highland Bagpipe and full-throated vocalism. For more information, http://www.myspace.com/blarvuster.

Electric Kulintang is the collaboration between celebrated percussionist-composers Susie Ibarra and Roberto Rodriguez. The duo draws upon Filipino musical and folklore traditions to create new kinds of trance music, played on electronics, kulintang gong, and western drum kit. Electric Kulintang’s compositions also incorporate recordings of indigenous culture the pair has taken on recent voyages to the Philippines. For more information, http://www.electrickulintang.com
