The Light Coorporation is a Polish avant-rock band making some good noises. Sabrina Lastman combines jazz, world, and vocal music in an interesting mix. Free Albums Galore turned us on to Vladislav Makarov’s solo cello recordings – great stuff.

From Sonomu:
Harold Budd & Clive Wright, A Song for Lost Blossoms (Darla)
As a whole, this is a middling album for Harold Budd. Then again, Harold Budd´s “middle” is usually of higher quality than most everybody else´s beginning, middle and end put together. Here is a collection of recordings made over the course of two or threee years by Budd and his friend Clive… [read]
Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 07:41, 18 Mar 2009Secret Archives of the Vatican, Babylon Halt (Broken Drum Records)
A trio of English- and Welshmen which considers itself a collective “powered by chickpeas” releases its first “factory” CD. Vince Millet plays guitar, Peter Sharpe bass and Louis Counter (good name for a percussionist) tabla. All fiddle with other things as well and are joined by about a dozen… [read]

From Sonomu:
Chris Herbert, Diluted (CDR Low Point)
I am in no way well versed in the genre of field recording, but I have heard my share. The most famous name that comes to mind is Chris Herbert´s countryman Chris Watson; then there is Dallas Simpson, also from the UK, whose unadorned field recordings came as refreshing countryside walks on a… [read]
Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 08:29, 05 Feb 2009Matthew Florianz, Maalbeek (H/S Recordings)
I would choose to classify the music of Matthew Florianz as ambient traditionalist or rather, “originalist”, in the sense that he maintains an unsettling, sombre tone throughout his work, restricts his palette, and like Brian Eno and Harold Budd before him, creates atmospheres and “landscapes”… [read]
Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 08:21, 05 Feb 2009Cisfinitum, Tactio (Mechanoise Labs)
Wherein the very acoustics of the cathedral of St. Petri in Bremen are as important as the instruments being played. Evgeny Voronovski has been purveying dark ambient for more than a decade now under the nom-de-musique Cisfinitum. He may well be the only ambient artist with a nationalist intent… [read]
Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 08:16, 05 Feb 2009Lepenik, Grete vor dem Haus (CDR Chmafu Nocords)
This compact disc nestles cozily on a square of dark blue cloth in a little cardboard box together with a couple of non-descript black and white photos, like a family heirloom forgotten in some drawer. (Robert) Lepenik plays his piano excruciatingly slow, the notes ocassionally tweaked and… [read]

Rothkamm, Opus Spongebobicum (Flux Records)
Frank Rothkamm has been an avant-garde pianist since his childhood in Germany. Now he is a bicoastal American with repetitive strain injury who also accepts commissions for commercials, video games and movie trailers. I am unfamiliar with any of his previous work but am informed that it always… [read]

Presenting the first collaboration between well-known Austrian field recordist Frank Rowenta and relative newcomer C.J. Larsgården from Sweden. This piece recorded two years ago smears Swedish and English in its titles to indicate its beginning, middle and end, book-ended between which are two… [read]

A single thirty-seven minute track in three distinct movements, recorded live (and possibly improvised?) in Wouter van Veldhoven´s digs on a summer day in 2007. Rutger Zuydervelt has worked with Mariska Baars and van Veldhoven before, but never to my knowledge on the same album. Their combined… [read]

Tobias Fischer runs (at least) two labels, maintains a highly informative website where he writes eloquently about music, but above all meticulously crafts his own, very distinctive sounds, putting him in the vanguard of a new generation of ambient and drone composers. The special niche carved out… [read]
Posted by Stephen Fruitman at 07:28, 09 Oct 2008Robin Guthrie & Harold Budd, After the Night Falls (Darla), Before the Day Breaks (Darla)
Two masters, two CDs. Conceived as “experiments in the dualities of music and emotion”, the long-standing relationship between pianist Harold Budd and guitarist Robin Guthrie began as far back as the curious and classic “The Moon and the Melodies” EP, featuring all the members of Guthrie´s old band… [read]
