Creative Nation Music Festival Coming March 28-29th

On Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th, Boston’s Creative Nation Music will present the first Creative Nation Music Festival at the Cambridge Family YMCA Theatre in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The official local celebration of the label’s fifth anniversary, and the culmination of its four-state package tour of New England, the festival will feature seven bands over the course of two nights.

The first night, hosted by Creative Nation Music recording artists, Quartet of Happiness, will be headlined by special guests, Mostly Other People Do The Killing (MOPDtK).

Sunday night will be hosted by guitarist and Creative Nation Music founder, Eric Hofbauer, and conclude with the official Boston CD release party for Muse (CNM 015), the new recording by The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra with special guest George Garzone.

The festival’s other performers will be the 1980’s-loving saxophone duo Ronald Reagan, the jazz-cum-avant-rock band Scurvy and Creative Nation Music recording artists, the Garrison Fewell/Eric Hofbauer Duo and Eric Hofbauer & The Infrared Band.

New Garrison Fewell And Ayn Inserto CDs Out

Improvised Communications discusses the two latest releases from Boston’s Creative Nation Music, guitarist/composer Garrison Fewell’s Variable Density Sound Orchestra (CNM 014) and The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra’s Muse (CNM 015).

Fewell’s second release for the label, following 2008’s The Lady of Khartoum (CNM 010), Variable Density Sound Orchestra is the self-titled debut of his newest working ensemble. The group features Eric Hofbauer (guitars and percussion), Roy Campbell (trumpet, flugelhorn, flute and percussion), Achille Succi (bass clarinet and alto saxophone), John Voight (bass), Miki Matsuki (drums) and Alex Fewell (percussion).

Muse, the follow-up to The Ayn Inserto Jazz Orchestra’s self-released 2006 debut, Clairvoyance, is built around the theme of celebrating those who inspired her. It features arrangements of three pieces by special guest George Garzone and original compositions honoring Bob Brookmeyer, Frank Foster and Steve Lacy among others.

Both releases are part of the label’s ongoing fifth anniversary celebration in 2009, which also includes a package tour of New England and the forthcoming launch of a new series of rare, never-before-released and reissued music called The Hub Collection.

Stephen Gauci’s “Basso Continuo”
The name “Basso Continuo” refers not to early music but rather to the double double bass backbone Mike Bisio and Ken Filiano (Ingebrigt Haker-Flaten on the CD) provide to Stephen Gauci’s quartet. On this remarkable group these sub-sonic kindred spirits interweave to form a lattice work that supports the multitude of sounds that tenor saxophonist Stephen Gauci and trumpeter Nate Wooley draw from their instruments and imaginations. Somehow the pair squeeze their oversized axes into every nook and cranny the music creates. They are here, then there, lurking, then striking. In sharp contrast to the faux-baroque name of Gauci’s quartet, the title of the album and each of the tracks have Indian overtones,perhaps bringing to mind John Coltrane’s late spiritual works. And of course Gauci plays the tenor saxophone, and so, like all who followed Coltrane, owes a debt to the tenor’s great master. Gauci’s more immediate indebtedness, however, is to his former teachers,“mainstream” greats Joe Lovano and George Garzone. His front-line running mate, Wooley, is one of the most daring experimentalists of present day improvisation and a brass master in his own right. These two teams —the pair of provocative horn players and the contemporary basso continuo — make a fantastic and unexpected combination.

The E.R.A. is a New York City based project that was formed in June of 2007. The E.R.A. is a septet with the power of a trio dealing with a subtle sensibiliy, silence, harmony and texture. Since 2005, these seven musicians have each performed and recorded in various duos, trios, and quartets. Inspired by these smaller combinations, Chris Welcome, Johnathan Moritz, John McLellan and Shayna Dulberger composed and arranged music for this unique instrumentation.
