From Improvised Communications:
On Friday, April 10th, Firehouse 12 will present a two-set performance by New York-based pianist/composer George Colligan and his trio featuring bassist Josh Ginsburg and drummer E.J. Strickland.
Colligan, who is known to critics as “an advanced jazz pianist and composer who has done high-ranking work as a sideman and a leader” (David R. Adler, All Music Guide), will lead the group in performances of original music from his 2008 release, Runaway (Sunnyside Records).
“George Colligan is a pianist who seems to stand out from the plethora of other fine players currently active on the scene,” writes Jazz.com’s Ralph A. Miriello. “His creative phrasing simply demands to be listened to. He is a pianist to be watched.”
AllAboutJazz.com’s John Kelman adds, “From the post bop of Eddie Henderson to the complex orchestrations of Jamie Baum and the gritty R&B of Don Byron’s tribute to Junior Walker, Colligan has done it all. With a growing discography as a leader since 1996, Colligan is an artist waiting to be discovered beyond the smaller confines of those in the know…hopefully the impressive Runaway will be the one to do it for him.”
For nearly two decades, Colligan has carved out a distinctive career as a prolific recording artist, in-demand sideman and respected bandleader/composer. Highly regarded for his ability to incorporate musical styles ranging from modern jazz to fusion to free improvisation to contemporary classical, he has appeared on more than 100 recordings, including 17 under his own name.
