Firehouse 12 To Present Mauger October 2nd

On Friday, October 2nd, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present the third event in its ongoing fifth anniversary Fall Jazz Series, a two-set performance by the all-star trio, Mauger. The group brings together acclaimed saxophonist Rudresh Mahanthappa, a 2007 Guggenheim Fellow and winner of the “Rising Star Jazz Artist” category in this year’s DownBeat Critics’ Poll, with veteran master musicians, and former Anthony Braxton Quartet members, bassist Mark Dresser and drummer Gerry Hemingway. Mauger will be performing music from its 2008 debut, The Beautiful Enabler (Clean Feed).

Firehouse 12 To Present The Steve Lehman Trio October 9th

On Friday, October 9th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present innovative saxophonist / composer Steve Lehman’s only area performance this year as part its fifth annual Fall Jazz Series. Lehman, who grew up in Hartford before earning two degrees at Wesleyan University during studies with Anthony Braxton and Jackie McLean, will be performing selections from his latest release, Trevail, Transformation, and Flow (Pi Recordings). Originally composed for his octet, the music, which daringly integrates elements of spectral harmony into jazz, has been meticulously arranged for this acoustic trio featuring bassist Chris Tordini and drummer Damion Reed.

On September 15th, Firehouse 12 Records will release Madeleine Dreams (FH12-04-01-011), the second recording from cornetist/composer Taylor Ho Bynum’s improvising chamber ensemble, SpiderMonkey Strings. The seven year-old group features Kyoko Kitamura (voice), Jason Kao Hwang (violin), Jessica Pavone (viola), Tomas Ulrich (cello), Pete Fitzpatrick (guitar), Joseph Daley (tuba) and Luther Gray (drums).

Ben Allison & Man Size Safe At Firehouse 12 Tonight

On Friday, May 29th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present acclaimed bassist/composer, and New Haven native, Ben Allison, with his newest ensemble, Man Size Safe, as part of the venue’s ongoing 2009 Spring Jazz Series. The band, which takes its name from a secret storage vault in former Vice President Dick Cheney’s office, mixes joyous exuberance and good-humored irreverence with textured grooves and the occasional political jab. Allison will be joined for this two-set performance by Jenny Sheinman (violin), Shane Endsley (trumpet), Steve Cardenas (guitar) and Michael Sarin (drums).

On Friday, June 5th, New Haven’s Firehouse 12 will present the penultimate event of its 2009 Spring Jazz Series, the CD release celebration for Sided Silver Solid (Firehouse 12 Records), the new recording by Carl Maguire’s Floriculture. The longstanding group, led by New York-based keyboardist/composer Carl Maguire, features violist Stephanie Griffin, multi-instrumentalist Oscar Noriega, bassist John Hébert and drummer Dan Weiss. Sided Silver Solid is the follow-up to band’s 2005 debut, Floriculture (Between the Lines).

Firehouse 12 To Present Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher June 12th

On Friday, June 12th, Firehouse 12’s 2009 Spring Jazz Series will conclude with a two-set performance by Dutch jazz heavyweights, Trio BraamDeJoodeVatcher. Led by pianist/composer Michiel Braam, and featuring bassist Wilbert de Joode and drummer Michael Vatcher, the group is touring North America in June and July, performing new compositions and welcoming a local improviser into the group at each stop. For this event, the trio’s late set will feature special guest cornetist, and Firehouse 12 Records co-founder, Taylor Ho Bynum.
