Upsilon Acrux’s European Tour

Tour dates are available (via the link) from Upsilon Acrux:

Upsilon Acrux (Los Angeles, CA, USA), an instrumental quintet (dual guitars, keyboards, bass and drums), is one of the most creative, original and sonically spellbinding bands on the U.S.A.’s thriving post-punk, avant-garde rock scene. Cuneiform Records has just released Radian Futura, the band’s sixth album of explosive, intense and surprisingly beautiful intricate, instrumental rock, which is generating praise and attention for the band in the music press. But in addition to such acclaimed recordings, Upsilon Acrux is reknown for presenting brutally intense live shows. Based on the West Coast, the band is a regular on the circuit of L.A.’s legendary venue, the Smell, where it continues to develop its uncompromising sound. Upsilon Acrux has shared the stage with such acts as The Boredoms, The Ruins, Mission of Burma, the Locust, Don Caballero, Bad Dudes, the Fucking Champs, Dillinger Escape Plan, Cattle Decapitation, Black Heart Procession, Hella, Lightning Bolt, Marnie Stern, Flying Luttenbachers, Orthrelm, Time of Orchids, Experimental Dental School, Truman’s Water and Mick Barr. Never seen on stage before outside the USA, the band will tour Europe for the first time ever in September and October 2009. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to see one of Upsilon Acrux’s legendary live performances in Continental Europe and the UK!!

Santa Monica Art Studios
3026 Airport Avenue, Santa Monica CA
$5 students, $10 adult
Website: LosAngelesNME.org

Program info:
This summer the Los Angeles New Music Ensemble is proud to present a summer series based on time, minimalism, and electronics. The program is centered around Terry Riley’s masterpiece of the minimalist movement, In C. In C has been lauded throughout the world as a seminal work in the history of contemporary music. Yet more importantly, the truly transcendent nature of the piece when heard live is something that we believe should be experienced by everyone. When played with skill, precision, and passion, Terry Riley’s visionary set of 53 musical cues becomes a transformative performance, and it is these attributes that we intend to bring to Southern California this summer.

We are also pleased to present two pieces especially commissioned for this series by Patrick Conlon and Dan Formidoni, and two older works by Evan Ziporyn and Dr. Marvin Lamb.

Bob Drake News

From Bob:

18 March 2009:

Oh it’s March. Rob Murphy is here and we’re putting the final touches on the mixes of the Nobodies album, to be entitled “Nobodies Cup of Tea” which we recorded here last July. (Note: the mixes you hear on their myspace page are really quick rough mixes I did at the end of the July session, don’t know why they’d make those available but oh well.) Anyway I think it’s going to be a great album and it’s always a pleasure working with Mr. Murphy.

In the meantime I continue stockpiling songs ideas for my next solo album which I still hope to begin recording late this summer. It’s been a long time coming, but after finishing my previous album The Shunned Country, I wanted to wait a long time before embarking on the next. The way it usually went was this: about the time I’d be finishing up an album, I’d already have a clear idea about the general character and direction for the next one. After Shunned, into which I’d put much more work than any of the others, I definitely felt I was done for a while, and having released six solo albums between 1994-2005, it didn’t bother me at all to say OK I’ll just stop for a while and wait. It seems to have worked; I’ve got a clear idea now for this next batch of tunes, they’re coming along nicely, they’ve got a different character than the last few albums, and who knows if anyone else is going to like it…as usual! Anyhow we’ll see…if I do get them recorded this year it’ll be released sometime in 2010. I’m still not in a big hurry apparently.

The following is a repeat from last month’s update, just hoping someone reads it and has some ideas!:

Bob Drake‘s Cabinet of Curiosities is looking for some gigs in October 2009, this time in the western USA. Let’s say for starters, roughly between Colorado-California, and along the west coast. As we did on the first tour, we want to play in garages, livingrooms, toolsheds, basements, backyards, informal coffee houses or galleries, that sort of thing. Any kind of informal or unusual setting! If you have any ideas, please write to me at: cabinet@bdrak.com

Label Profile

Songlines: Small Is Beautiful

The Songlines label is profiled.

This month’s jazz quiz: Name the most underappreciated independent label in jazz.

Ooooh. Tough one. There are so many. Most jazz, these days, is released on small labels, few of which are generating any kind of boffo profits. A few, like ECM, develop a historic identity over time. Others, like Pi in New York and Cryptogramophone in California, develop a stable of players and a laser following.

But the correct answer this time around is: Songlines.
