Bard Does Shostakovich

Bard College is presenting a Shostakovich Opera and related performances this summer:

Bard SummerScape
Bard’s SummerScape 2004 season will focus on the musical world of Russian composer Dmitrii Shostakovich. Events include the first professional East Coast production of Shostakovich’s comic opera The Nose, directed by the internationally celebrated Francesca Zambello, with set design by renowned architect Rafael Viñoly. The production features an international cast of Russian and American singers with Leon Botstein leading the American Symphony Orchestra. [Preview performance of The Nose on Wednesday, July 28, at 8:00 p.m. Premiere on Friday, July 30, at 8:00 p.m. Additional performances are Sunday, August 1, at 3:00 p.m.; Friday, August 6, at 8:00 p.m.; and Saturday, August 7, at 8:00 p.m.] Other highlights of SummerScape include Shostakovich’s Cheryemushki, a musical in two acts; Nikolai Gogol’s The Inspector General; a production of Guest from the Future, a new musical by Mel Marvin; the 15th annual Bard Music Festival: Shostakovich and His World; a Shostakovich film festival; and
