[Ahmed] is based on radical repetition and syncopation. The model and impetus are the music and philosophy of Ahmed Abdul-Malik, a bassist for Monk among many others, and a composer and oudist whose innovations as a bandleader predated ‘world music’ intercultural experiments by decades. [Ahmed] is, at once, a rich (and richly conceptual) excavation of an under-sung master’s oeuvre, and one of the most hard-driving and swinging bands anywhere.

12/09 concert @ Art in the Margins, Montreal (CA)
14/09 concert @ Guelph Jazz Festival (CA)

Joel Grip pushes the act of being in between radical and familiar rooms of thought and encounter. In the making of images (let them be musical or drawn) he exerts a continuous flow of letting go allowing for the mysteries of love, swing and future to appear at the foot of the face of the other. On the first day of Joel Grip’s exhibition At the foot of a face at Petersburg Art Space, we will celebrate the wonderful Tristan Honsinger (1949-2023). With performances by amongst others: Hook, Line & Sinker, Klub Demboh, Hopscotch, O’Pif, Chino Shuichi, Michael Moore, Ab Baars and Olaf Rupp.

Clarinetist Joris Rühl will be performing at Musica Festival (Strasbourg) for two concerts : a first encounter around the historical foundations of the Scratch Orchestra, led by local artists and the Dedalus Ensemble and aimed to create a new horizontal orchestra, and an ambient night with ONCEIM orchestra to discover the “sound phenomena” of Jean Catoire, the forgotten composer and precursor of minimalism.

16/09 La nuit Jean Catoire @ Festival Musica, Strasbourg (FR)

Eve Risser is a marvelously untenable composer, pianist and improviser, a rebel who never lets go of the boundaries of jazz, contemporary writing or popular music and traditions, a fan of wide-open spaces and unheard-of experiments… In September, Lyon Opera gives carte blanche to Eve Risser for a week. She will be presenting her trio En Corps, her quartet Brique and her Ensemble Ensemble. You can also catch her performing her solo, and find her at Musica Festival for a collaboration with author Lucie Taiëb.
