Ars Nova Workshop is thrilled to announce our Fall 2023 programming season. It kicks off with the star-studded “Messages” suite by Patrick Zimmerli and featuring Chris Potter. We’ll be hosting a few multi-night residencies: Idris Ackamoor and his pioneering Afro-Futurist ensemble The Pyramids, celebrating their 50th anniversary; the “ecstatic minimalism” of Joshua Abrams’ Natural Information Society featuring living legend Ari Brown; and Panama-born International Anthem artist Daniel Villarreal. Ars Nova will host an exciting new project from Pi Recordings artist Anna Webber, who the Wall Street Journal called “visionary and captivating.” We’ll be celebrating the 100th birthday of the late, great Sam Rivers with the Joseph Daley Tuba Trio, and the 50th anniversary of two landmark albums that expanded the boundaries of jazz fusion: Herbie Hancock’s Head Hunters (led by The War on Drugs’ Charlie Hall) and the Carlos Santana-John McLaughlin collaboration Love Devotion Surrender. Ches Smith’s We All Break, inspired by traditional Haitian Vodou music and featuring Smith’s Haitian teacher Daniel Brevil and Philadelphia saxophonist Immanuel Wilkins will make a very rare appearance. And we’ll be hosting ensembles featuring punk legend Mike Watt, early AACM member Adegoke Steve Colson, psychedelic drone family band TENGGER, and The Bad Plus saxophonist Chris Speed’s latest trio. And more!
