Bang on a Can curates an eclectic supermix of music performances in its 14th summer of programming at the Noguchi Museum. Alongside the exhibition Noguchi Subscapes, “a survey of Isamu Noguchi’s particular interest in the unseen and hidden”, and with a common eye toward fusing modern influences with the traditional, the 2023 Bang on a Can Artists at Noguchi series features musicians performing an inclusive blend of music from across genre, and across the world. Musicians include tombstar, feat. eddy kwon: violin, Isabel Crespo Pardo: voice, Zekkereya El-magharbel: trombone, Lesley Mok: drums (Friday, June 23, 4pm); Tomas Fujiwara Percussion Quartet (Sunday, July 9, 4pm); Issei Herr + Matt Evans (Sunday, August 27, 4pm); For Living Lovers, feat. Brandon Ross: guitar & Stomu Takeishi:bass (Sunday, September 24, 4pm).

Sunday, June 25, 4pm – tombstar (Isabel Crespo Pardo, Zekkereya El-magharbel, Lesley Mok, eddy kwon)
A new ensemble comprising improvisers, composer-performers, and interdisciplinary artists from Brooklyn and Detroit who explore the collective subconscious through improvisation, composition, and joyful experimentation.

Sunday, July 9, 4pm – Tomas Fujiwara: Dream Up for Percussion Quartet
Drummer and composer Tomas Fujiwara’s “Dream Up,” is a suite for percussion quartet, featuring vibraphonist Patricia Brennan, taiko drummer Kaoru Watanabe, percussionist Tim Keiper, and Fujiwara on drums.“Dream Up” draws inspiration from Tomas’ years as a performer in Stomp, and as a member of multi-percussion ensembles such as his own Triple Double, 7 Poets Trio, and Shizuko, Mike Reed’s Living By Lanterns, and the Broadway show Fela. The suite is a celebration of storytelling, history, memory, and culture through the transformative power of rhythm.

Sunday, August 27, 4pm – Issei Herr + Matt Evans
A double bill in the galleries featuring solo performances by cellist Issei Herr and drummer/producer Matt Evans. Issei Herr mines her background as a classically trained cellist to create a new sonic-world, exploring openness, vulnerability, and a sense of wonder in her intricately looped and layered compositions. Matt Evans presents a solo electro-acoustic performance for drumset. Taking cues from millennial esoterica, natural phenomena, and science fiction, Matt uses drum-driven hypnotic soundscapes and improvisatory performances to embody imaginary ecosystems of surreal sonic worlds.

Sunday, September 24, 4pm – For Living Lovers (Brandon Ross & Stomu Takeishi)
Guitarist Brandon Ross and bassist Stomu Takeishi are both longtime veterans of New York City’s creative music scene. Over the course of their long collaboration, the duo have developed a unique dialogue and timbral language for guitar and bass. In Living Lovers music poses questions: physical, philosophical and sonic – all while inviting the listener to participate in an intimate conversation.
