BRIAN!, Spectrum 3
Doors 7:30 pmIthaca, New York’s BRIAN! is an experimental art-rock ensemble featuring David Resig’s amplified bassoon at the front of the texture. Veering towards classic British prog, guitarist Bubba Crumrine gets ample opportunity to showcase a variety of approaches to the instrument, from locking into the polymath beats of drummer Willie B, to creating ambient soundscapes, with the ensemble delivering a pretty even balance of instrumental and vocal pieces
Spectrum 3 is the project lead by Detroit’s Skeeter C.R. Shelton, one of the city’s most distinctive voices on the saxophone and other wind instruments. The emotive intensity of Skeeter’s playing is matched by the beauty of his sound and he’s been getting accolades from artists as significant as Fred Anderson, Matthew Shipp and Han Bennink. With Joel Peterson (double-bass) and James Baljo (drums) as the touring unit, Spectrum 3 has been the main vehicle for getting Skeeter’s music out to the wider world this decade, and the group is gearing up for their fourth tour this spring.
