Breath Of Air, Breath Of Air (BAM84)

Breath Of Air is a new trio featuring electric guitarist Brandon Ross of Harriet Tubman, and violinist Charles Burnham and drummer Warren Benbow of James “Blood” Ulmer’s Odyssey. Their debut album was recorded at the Sound It Out concert series in New York in February 2020, and mixed by legendary engineer Scotty Hard. The music blends blues, the Black string band tradition (Carolina Chocolate Drops, Ebony Hillbillies), rock ‘n’ roll and power drone into something wholly unique in the world of improvised music. José Lencastre, Inner Voices (BAM85)

José Lencastre is an up-and-coming Portuguese saxophonist who has recorded for Clean Feed, and co-runs his own Phonogram Unit label. His quintet participated in the Burning Ambulance Festival, a five-hour concert that streamed online on New Year’s Day. Inner Voices is an exploratory sonic journey Lencastre created in partnership with producer and electronic musician Ary. Overdubbing multiple horn lines, enhancing the music through judicious use of echo, reverb and EQ, and interacting with live electronics in real time, Lencastre creates an immersive sonic experience that will appeal equally to fans of the World Saxophone Quartet and Adrian Sherwood.
