Every year, the defining characteristics of modern jazz become a little bit fuzzier as, every year, musicians offer up music that transcends categorization and obliterates expectations. The music in this month’s list exemplify that trend as well as anything I’ve encountered lately, even as they go about celebrating qualities of jazz reflecting its foundation and its roots.
