This Saturday, April 2
Francisco Mora-Catlett’s AfroHORN
Doors at 7:30 pm | $15 general admission | $20 reserved seatingFormer Detroiter Francisco Mora’s New York-based ensemble, AfroHORN, is one of the most interesting groups in the history of Afro-Cuban and jazz fusion. Deeply folkloric, AfroHORN’s use of layered percussion and the integral role of the baritone saxophone bring to mind the arrangements of Sun Ra Arkestra, an ensemble that Mora used to play in. But this is no copycat act, and the depth of playing by Cuban pianist Aruan Ortiz and percussionist Roman Diaz connects this music to another world altogether.
