Joe McPhee’s Defiant Jazz Makes it to Prime Time TV

Not that prime time TV exists anymore in the streaming world, but last night’s episode of Severance on Apple TV featured part of a track titled Shakey Jake from saxophonist Joe McPhee’s 1971 release Nation Time.

Severance is an oddly compelling show. While a couple of episodes remain in its first season, so far it has managed to combine corporate dystopia, profound loss, and dark humor all while making the viewer question what it means to be a person. Referred to as “defiant jazz”, the McPhee tune is played by the characters during an ostensible “dance party” that devolves into chaos in sync with the music.
