In Conversation Daniel Barbiero

Source: ARTEIDOLIA. AMN’s Daniel Barbiero is interviewed about his approach toward improvisation and art.

Improvising to paintings not only is a possibility, it’s something I’ve done many times and love to do. In fact, when I was music director for the Havlik Dance Performance Group we once did an exercise during rehearsal where the dancers and I all improvised to a Kandinsky painting. So it all comes around—Kandinsky was inspired to paint by a piece of music, and we were inspired to improvise by one of his paintings. At about the same time, we did a performance at a gallery in downtown DC. I happened to be positioned in front of an abstract painting, which I very happily used as a score for the duration of the performance.
