This Thursday, December 30: Agape Trio plus Salim Washington
This last-minute addition to our schedule features music from Agape Trio with special guest Salim Washington. A native of Detroit living in New York, Washington is multi-wind player and excellent saxophonist. His secondary instruments are reminiscent of Yusef Lateef, in that he focuses on flute and the much rarer instrument for improvising, oboe. The leader of The Harlem Arts Ensemble, he was an early member of The Sun Messengers and has worked with Fred Ho, Anthony Braxton, Donald Smith, Hakim Jami, Ku-umba Frank Lacy and many others. For this show, he joins the new working ensemble, Agape Trio, featuring baritone sax and bass clarinet great Alex Harding and the dynamic rhythm section of David Hurley on percussion and Joel Peterson on doublebass.

Virago Listening for Bells Record Release Show | Michael Malis
Virago is an improvising chamber ensemble of new players from Ann Arbor, performing for the release of their debut recording. Listening for Bells is a 30 to 40-minute exploration of minimalism at the intersection of composition and improvisation. The piece was commissioned by and written for chamber music improvisers Virago by Harriet Steinke. Steinke utilizes the number four as a unifying element: at the macro level there are four parts to the piece and on the micro level each part is made up of four cells containing phrases for the players to perform at the timing they choose. To bring this ambiguous score to life, Virago digs into their roots as chamber musicians and improvisers to create a new version of the piece each time it is played. The result is a journey of peaks and valleys, waxing and waning, rising and falling, ebbing and flowing. For this matinee performance, Virago is joined by friends Dominic Bieringa on bass clarinet and Michael Malis on piano. Malis will also open the evening with a solo set.
