Bassist Dave Holland began playing in London in the mid-’60s; he was a member of the Spontaneous Music Ensemble in 1968, before he was recruited into Miles Davis‘s band, where he stayed until 1970. After playing on Filles de Kilimanjaro, In a Silent Way, and Bitches Brew and touring extensively with Davis, he formed Circle with Chick Corea, Anthony Braxton, and Barry Altschul. Holland played extensively with Braxton and Sam Rivers during the early 1970s, and recorded the album Conference of the Birds, a crucial avant-garde document, for ECM in 1973. Since then, he’s done about eight thousand things including leading his own quartets, quintets, an octet and a big band…his catalog is deep and impressive, and it spans just about every kind of jazz you can think of and then some.
