We just discovered that composer Andrew Violette (1953-15 April 2021) died earlier this year. Violette attended the Juilliard School where he studied with Elliott Carter, Otto Luening, and Roger Sessions. He also took master classes with Pierre Boulez. He composed over 65 works between 1970 and 2007; his later compositions are notable for their combination of Romantic and Minimalist elements. Among his recent works are sonatas for solo organ, solo violin, and solo guitar, the long durations of which reflect Violette’s interest in exploring how time is perceived through music. Violette’s post-1989 works were self-published and made available under a Creative Commons license. He also made recordings of much of his work available on YouTube.
