Tribute to Fred Anderson
September 25 8:30pm
Ernest Dawkins leads a quartet including Justin Dillard, Junius Paul, and Isaiah Spencer in an evening of music in tribute to one of Chicago’s great jazz patriarchs: Fred Anderson. As Ernest Dawkins was quoted in the Chicago Reader, “No one sounds like Fred. … Even though he was ‘free,’ he still had that African-American method about what he was doing. … It was the esthetic that he came from — Louisiana, and you could hear that in his sound. If you really listened, you could hear that underneath everything he was doing.”
September 26 8:30pm
Shi-An Costello performs John Cage’s playful and vibrant masterpiece Sonatas and Interludes for Prepared Piano. The Sonatas and Interludes, a cycle of twenty pieces, was written in the late 1940s for “prepared piano,” the placing of resonant objects on and in the piano in order to manipulate the instrument’s tonal and percussive qualities. The evening also includes a new work by composer Danny Clay. Clay’s work is deeply rooted in curiosity, collaboration, and the sheer joy of making things with people of all ages and levels of artistic experience.
