101 Free Jazz Essential Albums

To structure this “Top 101 of Free Jazz”, we started from some premises: we focused on albums that helped to structure this music or opened new paths; discs that define it aesthetically and expressively; historical records that shook the existing bases or made the proposals that guide free music to perfection. Some rules governed the survey: the choice was restricted to a maximum of 2 discs on which the artist is a leader or co-leader; collections, boxes, special editions were disregarded, with an emphasis on albums themselves; we consider the temporal and aesthetic scope of the material highlighted, ranging from pioneer records that still carry more jazzy elements (like “Iron Man”) to those who are already starting to dive more deeply into other fields (like the noise in “Mass Projection”
