Birds cannot fly — let alone soar — with broken wings. They need full freedom and mobility to reach the highest heights. Likewise, Jaimie Branch requires at least the possibility of flight to manifest the jazz she hears in her head. Since 2017, the trumpeter has released two brilliant, blazing records under the Fly or Die moniker. The phrase, a riff on the popular axiom “ride or die,” just sounds right in Branch’s ears — the right way to frame art and every other aspect of existence.
