Saturday & Sunday7/13 & 7/14: Phil Ranelin’s 80th birthday weekend!
Detroit music icon, trombonist and founder of the legendary Tribe Records, Phil Ranelin returns to Detroit to celebrate his 80th birthday. A visionary artist who, following the ’67 rebellion in Detroit, channeled the spirit of self-determination into the organization known as Tribe (which included not only the label, but also a magazine and production company). and in doing so helped launch the careers of Marcus Belgrave, Wendell Harrison, Griot Galaxy and Doug Hammond among others. For this birthday celebration weekend, Phil has enlisted the talents of Rod Williams (piano), Marcus Elliot (winds), Jaribu Shahid (bass) and Djallo Djakate (drums). It’s almost like we put together the band for him! Do not miss this celebration of one of the great living heroes of Detroit music.
