The Decisive Instant, an avant-garde big band, appears at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts on Sunday July 7 as part of the Open Gate concert series curated by Will Salmon and Alex Cline.
Founded in 2012 by Jeff Schwartz, Charles Sharp, and the late Robert Leng, the Decisive Instant has performed music by artists
including Anthony Braxton, Sun Ra, Frank Zappa, Don Cherry, Peter Brotzmann, and John Coltrane, as well as by members of the group. This show features five Los Angeles composers, each leading their own work: Jack Curtis Dubowsky, Vinny Golia, George Oldziey, William Roper, and Charles Sharp. Each takes a different approach to combining improvisation and composition for a large group.
This is the largest version of the group so far, with over twenty members, representing an inter-generational and stylistically diverse sample of LA’s experimental jazz and improvised music communities.
The program begins at 7PM with a solo percussion set by Chris Garcia, a master of Indian and Central American instruments best known for his drumset work with the Zappa alumni band The Grandmothers of Invention.
On Wednesday July 17, 2019, at 7:30 pm, the Soundwaves new music series at the Santa Monica Public Library presents a set of improvised music by pianist Thollem McDonas and drummer Alex Cline in the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium of the Main Library at 601 Santa Monica Blvd.
McDonas has toured literally nonstop for over a decade, performing around the world solo and in collaborations with artists from contemporary classical music, free jazz, punk rock, and other genres, including Pauline Oliveros, William Parker, and Mike Watt. He appears on over sixty albums.
Alex Cline’s work has been more local, with highlights including major projects for the 2012 and 2015 Angel City Jazz Festivals and at the Hammer Museum, appearances at the Blue Whale with Satoko Fujii and David Binney, and a rare out-of-town trip to accompany his twin brother Nels at the 2016 Newport Jazz Festival. He also co-hosts the Open Gate concert series at the Eagle Rock Center for the Arts.
Soundwaves is a concert series emphasizing artists who appear on the DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music) streaming service. The Santa Monica Public Library is the first public library to offer this service to its cardholders.
