If you listened to Holly Herndon’s 2012 EP, Movement, you could be forgiven for filing it under ‘experimental’. An academic by day and a laptop performer by night, the electronic avant-garde musician was deep into visual programming language Max/MSP and creating her own processors and instruments. Fast-forward to 2019, and for her third full-length studio album, PROTO, Herndon is exploring the musical worlds opened up by artificial intelligence by birthing a new collaborator called Spawn, housed within a high-spec gaming computer.
