Sat. May 4: The Chicago Plan
Steve Swell (NYC) trombone
Gebhard Ullmann (Berlin) winds
Fred Lonberg-Holm (Chicago/Kingston) cello
Michael Zerang (Chicago) percussion
For nearly 15 years, we’ve presented the ongoing partnership between Steve Swell and Gebhard Ullmann–beginning with their first collaboration, The Ullmann/Swell Quartet featuring Hill Greene and Barry Altschul, at Bohemian National Home. Now the two co-leaders are back with a new version of the quartet featuring two great musicians who’ve been pivotal to creative music in Chicago, Michael Zerang and Fred Lonberg-Holm. This iteration of the ensemble is appropriately named The Chicago Plan and like all versions of the group, Swell and Ullman’s written material is the springboard for an array of improvisational approaches that demonstrates the collective depth of experience and broad musical interests of each member. For this U.S. tour, the group will be performing new music recorded in Europe.

Tues., May: 7 Jamie Branch’s Fly or Die
A native of New York, trumpeter Jamie Branch first made her mark in the Chicago creative music scene after moving there as a teenager. She quickly worked her way into the center of the scene, organizing concerts and performing with other such notables as Ken Vandermark, Tim Daisy, Keefe Jackson, Frank Rosaly and many others. Branch has performed with groups like her trio Princess, Princess and the quartet Block and Tackle, which she founded with Jason Stein, Jeb Bishop and Jason Roebke. In 2012, Branch moved to Baltimore, where she founded the record label Pionic Records. Using her proximity to stay active in New York, she continues to work with Brandon Lopez, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Mike Stolthet among others there. She also has performed on albums with the rock groups Never Enough Hope, Local H and Atlas Math. Currently, she works in a quartet with Chad Taylor, Jason Ajemian and Tomeka Reid, as well as with Brandon Lopez, Mike Pride, Shayna Dulberger and Weasel Walter. For this tour, the line-up of Fly or Die is:
