Lloyd Swanton on the Art of Free Improvisation

Source: The Strad.

Since their inception in 1987, Australian trio the Necks have pursued uncompromising, spontaneous improvisation – they prepare nothing in advance for live performance.

For bassist Lloyd Swanton, their aesthetic is summed up in Christopher Small’s slogan ‘process not product’, from his influential book Music, Society, Education (1977): ‘I read it while studying in London in 1986 and it turned my head around,’ Swanton comments. ‘Small argues that for many of the world’s musical traditions the process of making music is far more valued than the finished product. He even coins a verb – strictly, a gerund – “musicking”.’

Visible Traces
Premieres by Balch, Ricketts, Saunders, & Xenakis’ exquisite Palimpsest for 11 players
January 27, 2019 | 7pm

Wavefield Ensemble, the invigorating new musical collective dedicated to collaboratively inspiring the next generation of brilliant artists, continues its season of works inspired by the novel Rewrite by Bulgarian-Canadian author Temenuga Trifonova. The second iteration of this exploration is a concert of music written over other music, sonic layers covered up and revealed again in surprising new forms. Featuring a trio of US premieres next to Iannis Xenakis’ rarely performed Palimpsest, this stimulating concert brings past and present into illuminating juxtaposition, exposing hidden resonances and layered meanings.

The program to include:
Matthew Ricketts Melodia (2018) (Premiere of new version)
Rebecca Saunders: a visible trace (2006) (US premiere)
Katherine Balch’s Una Corda (2016) (US premiere)
Iannis Xenakis: Palimpsest (1979)

Wavefield Ensemble is a collectively organized group of musicians dedicated to performing music and creating new artistic work at the highest level, and to actively engaging in educational activities geared toward inspiring the next generation of artists and performers. We aim to collaborate with like minded artists, performers, and thinkers of all stripes, and to offer a platform for all whose work demands it. Our goal is to share this work as broadly as possible and in so doing to inspire those we contact to a more deeply creative engagement with the world.
