This three-person drone performance was recorded live in Münster late last year. Anja Kreysing provides accordion and electronics, Dan Penschuck is on percussion, synth, and effects, and Sascha Stadlmeier plays guitar, heater, wood, voice, and effects. Over two long tracks, this trio offers what could be the soundtrack to a demented horror movie. In addition to the aforementioned drones – which are dark and haunting, Penschuck and Stadlmeier set forth disjointed and indeterminate percussion. These latter contributions use what appears to be a combination of found objects and more conventional drum equipment. Another standout aspect of the release is Kreysing’s slow-moving accordion playing. She layers it over and around the synths, but also brings it to the fore to evoke an ominous atmosphere not unlike that of a deranged circus. As a result, Re-encypher goes beyond run-of-the-mill stylings and is an interesting bridge between dark ambient music, free improv, and something mysterious and sinister. Recommended.

Sound American False Starts Available
Source: Sound American.
Sound American is the product of false starts: glorious, hilarious, naive, informative, and important false starts. Every single one of these aborted attempts brought SA closer to understanding what we wanted to do (open up experimental music to everyone) and how we wanted to do it (by having musicians write in their own words about what they do).
The most consistent and committed of these projects was New World Radio, a streaming service in which we created all the content from interviews, archival material, and works featured in DRAM (Database of Recorded American Music). It is on this project that our editor, Nate Wooley, cut his teeth and inklings of Sound American began.
The shows in this series are featured for the first time for download here. We have chosen a handful of the programs made for NWRadio based on the wisdom imparted by the guests. As you will soon figure out, these are not professional radio broadcasts, or even professional-sounding podcasts. They are, however, sincere attempts to find out what some of the world’s most interesting musicians are thinking about, how they came to be thinking about it, and what they think they will think of next. It is with that in mind, that we now make them available.
These shows initially had full-length musical interludes, which have been abridged here in order to not be giving away any one’s musical property. If you like what you hear, please take note of the title and album and go buy it!
All proceeds from the sales of these shows go into Sound American’s operating budget for release of recordings, books, and to pay the honoraria of each of our issues’s writers.
