Concert: Chris Forsyth, Sfyria Trio, Olive Tiger
Jun 22, 2018 8:00 PM – 11:00 PM

Chris Forsyth is a lauded guitarist, composer, and bandleader whose widescreen art-rock, fusing taut compositions and mercurial improvisations, has earned him a reputation as one of the most distinctive and critically acclaimed guitarists working today. In 2013, he assembled The Solar Motel Band, who quickly developed a reputation as an incredible live act, provoking comparisons to visionary artists such as Television, The Grateful Dead, Popol Vuh, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, and Richard Thompson. In 2016 he released the double LP The Rarity of Experience (No Quarter) to universal raves. Pitchfork called it “a near-perfect balance between 70s rock tradition and present day experimentation,” NPR Music named Forsyth “one of rock’s most lyrical guitar improvisors,” and the New York Times calls him “a scrappy and mystical historian… His music humanizes the element of control in rock classicism (and) turns it into a woolly but disciplined ritual.” His most recent release with the new Solar Motel Band is the digital-only “Rare Dreams: Solar Live 2.27.18,” recorded live at Cafe Oto, London.

Sfyria Trio is a Chicago/Brooklyn-based free-improvising ensemble comprised of Sam Decker on tenor saxophone, Charlie Kirchen on bass, and Matt Carroll on drums. Drawing on influences from jazz, certain strains of twentieth century classical music, and various folk traditions, the group sculpts delicately textured improvisations that seamlessly navigate a variety of sonic worlds.

Olive Tiger is an evolution of sound and texture: a nontraditional trio hailing from New England that lushly combines electronics with organic elements of chamber-pop, defying the boundaries of genre in favor of obsessive exploration. Grounded in the stunning songwriting and soaring voice of its bandleader, Olive Tiger arcs continuously toward more meticulous, more rich and more seductive arrangements.

Andy McLeod (VA) is a musician and visual artist living in Fredericksburg Va. Inspired by the work of Jack Rose and Pelt, Fahey and Delta Blues, he taught himself how to play finger style guitar in open tuning and experimented with mixing it with drones and psychedelic elements and in the process he got into clawhammer banjo so that this became a big part in his current work as well.
