First of all, a new album on the Relative Pitch label with a collaborative quartet with some of my favorite improvisers: Geometry of Caves, with Joe Morris (guitar), Tomeka Reid (cello), and Kyoko Kitamura (voice).
Then I’ll be on the road in Europe with Anthony Braxton’s amazing ZIM Music Ensemble – proving that all great bands have two harps, a tuba and an accordion. We’ll be in Rome, three nights in London, and Vienna. European friends come out and enjoy, once again, calendar details below. For those of you in NYC interested in Anthony’s music systems, I’ll be teaching a participatory workshop on Braxton’s music at the Jazz Gallery at 1pm on Sunday, June 10.
And some new (old) releases on my bandcamp page. Continuing my bootleg series, Volume V is dedicated to Pop Songs – covers of tunes by two of my heroes, Prince and Bjork, and an alternate take of the power ballad from my Enter the Plustet album. Featuring an incredible cast of musicians: Kyoko Kitamura, Jim Hobbs, Evan Patrick, Nick Lloyd, Stomu Takeishi, Pheeroan akLaff, Abraham Gomez-Delgado, Marika Hughes, Chad Taylor, and the whole 15-piece PlusTet big band.
It’s been just about 20 years since I recorded two of the first commercially released albums I was involved with. (I guess I’m middle aged now.) Both these recordings are basically impossible to find now, so happy to put them up on bandcamp. Eric Rosenthal and I had an ongoing duo project deconstructing standards and improvising – and only life my lush lament was the first of our two records. Paradigm Shift was a collective brass ensemble organized by Stephen Haynes and myself, The RAW Field Recordings was appropriately enough recorded in a field at Real Art Ways in Hartford, featuring Joseph Daley, Pheeroan akLaff, Syd Smart, Aaron Johnson, and Salim Washington. As fate would have it, I’ll be playing with Eric and Stephen in Stephen’s new group Knuckleball on June 12, at Real Arts Ways no less…see details below and see you there!
