On Thursday June 14, 2018, 2018 at 7:30PM, the Soundwaves new music series at the Santa Monica Public Library welcomes pianist Susan Svrcek to the Martin Luther King Jr. Auditorium at the Main Library, 601 Santa Monica Blvd.

This concert is a preview of her upcoming performance on the PianoSpheres series at Zipper Hall in Downtown Los Angeles June 19. Her program, entitled “Hymn for the Oppressed,” features compositions by Yuji Takahashi and Frederic Rzewski‘s monumental set of variations on “The People United Will Never be Defeated.” Both composers reconnected the radical aesthetics and politics of the 1960s to traditional virtuosity.

Susan Svrcek is an award-winning concert pianist who has performed internationally solo and with orchestras, an in-demand instructor, and a graduate of Cal Arts, Yale, and USC.

Founded in 1994, PianoSpheres presents a core group of four pianists plus a guest artist in annual recitals. It is one of the pillars of the LA classical music scene. This year is the start of a collaboration between PianoSpheres and the Santa Monica Public Library/Soundwaves to present free Westside previews of their regular Downtown concerts. 5049 Records Podcast Episode 160: Bill Orcutt

Source: 5049 Records.

For the past several decades, guitarist Bill Orcutt has been on a singular musical journey that started in Miami, FL and has led him all over the world. On a recent visit to New York, he stopped by the 5049 Chihuahua Sanctuary for a talk about his work, the Bay Area, growing up in Florida, picking up and putting down the guitar and a whole lot more. A great talk with a completely unique musician.
