Breathe deeply, grab a drink, sit down. Or stand up. Whatever. You do you. Get comfortable—then get ready. You’re at Party 2018, which overturns the so-very-1918 “clap, listen, clap, go home” concert paradigm by pairing food, beverages, and mingling with musical performances that run the gamut from the preposterous to the sober to the sublime. This year’s Party features a new staging of Arnold Schoenberg’s classic Pierrot Lunaire, sung by soprano Carrie Henneman Shaw. You might say, “wait! That’s 100 years old!” Well, good job, Professor Music Historian. For counterpoint, we turn to conductor/snake charmer/actual professor Michael Lewanski, who says: “Pierrot is so NOT new music. But Pierrot is SO new music.” He will happily expand on this topic at the Party, in both public and private conversations; meanwhile, for those who prefer their new music as new as possible, we present a world premiere by Sky Macklay, whose work “explores bold contrasts, audible processes, humor, and the physicality of sound,” along with several smaller works, mostly younger than the performers themselves, throughout the evening.
