Coming to Detroit

English: Susan Alcorn

Friday, April 27: Earl Davis Quartet
Trumpeter Earle Davis recieved his musical education in the 1940’s at Minton’s Playhouse, the legendary New York venue where he got to play with Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clark and the other architects of bebop. In the 60’s, his career veered to The New Thing, leading to performances with John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Cecil Tailor, Archie Shepp, Roswell Rudd; later he moved to California and worked with Roy Ayers and Bobby Hutcherson, among others.

Tuesday, May 1: Anteloper (Jamie Branch and Jason Nazary), Ben Willis (solo)
Anteloper is the elctro-acoustic duo of Jamie Branch (trumpet) and Jason Nazary (drums and electronics). They’re joined by Detroit’s own Ben Willis, performing his excellent double-bass solo set.

Thursday, May 3: Chris Forsyth’s Solar Motel Band, Sunwatchers
Chris Forsyth played the very first show at Trino as a solo guitarist. Since that time, he also made the regional debut of his group The Solar Motel here a couple years ago. They’ve gone to make some waves in the press, with their modal guitar jams drawing comparisons to Television and The Grateful Dead. For this show, they’re bringing the New York psych-rock, instrumental group Sunwatchers with them. Get ready for some full-intensity excursions!

Milford Graves Profiled

Milford Graves

Source: The New York Times.

Calling Milford Graves an autodidact would be basically correct, but it gets at the wrong idea. Known as a game-changing drummer of the 1960s avant-garde, he’s also become a kind of underground thought-leader in martial arts, natural healing and cellular biology. That wasn’t just by learning from what was available; he likes to build new systems, reshaping the channels by which information comes to him.
