Tonight! Wednesday, April 18: Spectral (Dave Rempis/Larry Ochs/Darren Johnston)
This free-improvising trio came together in the fall of 2011, when Rempis journeyed to the West Coast to discover some things about his compatriots on the Bay Area improving scene. Trumpeter Johnston, a frequent visitor to Chicago, where the two had collaborated in several different settings in the years prior, suggested this trio lineup for a performance at Oakland’s Uptown Nightclub. Although Rempis hadn’ worked with Ochs before, the latter’s renowned experience in the all-horn lineup of The ROVA Saxophone Quartet made the idea especially appealing.
Doors at 8pm- $10 general Admission; $15 seated

Friday, April 27: Earl Davis Quartet
Trumpeter Earle Davis recieved his musical education in the 1940’s at Minton’s Playhouse, the legendary New York venue where he got to play with Thelonius Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Kenny Clark and the other architects of bebop. In the 60’s, his career veered to The New Thing, leading to performances with John Coltrane, Sun Ra, Cecil Tailor, Archie Shepp, Roswell Rudd; later he moved to California and worked with Roy Ayers and Bobby Hutcherson, among others.
