Jazz at Atlas presents: Broken Shadows
Saturday, May 19, 2018
8:00 PM 11:00 PM
A powerhouse convergence of four eminent players — Tim Berne on alto saxophone; Chris Speed on tenor saxophone and clarinet; Reid Anderson on bass; and Dave King on drums — gather “to reinterpret the timeless sounds conjured by great men from the rural South and heartland of the country: Ornette Coleman, Julius Hemphill, Dewey Redman, Charlie Haden. These iconic figures created an ever-resonant avant-garde out of the folk-art influences of their early surroundings, a canon that comprises the hard blues and deep lament, keening celebration and hollering protest.”
June 16: Clarinet Madness — This quartet of virtuosi includes clarinetists Perry Robinson and Michael Marcus, bassist William Parker (returning to J@A after his unforgettable launch of our live music series last year) and drummer Jay Rosen.
July 21: Ted Daniel and the International Brass & Membrane Corps — Lifelong Hudson Valley resident Daniel leads this exceptional group on trumpets and flugelhorn. IMBC plays the timeless music of early jazz artists with a reverent yet thoroughly modern approach and features Charles Burnham on violin, Joseph Daley on tuba and Newman Taylor Baker on drums. They will also be touring in support of their new recording “Zulu’s Ball — Ted Daniel Plays the Music of King Oliver.”
