When it comes to Anthony Braxton’s stupefyingly large discography, the major shock isn’t that he eventually found it necessary to start his own label. In retrospect, the surprise is that this development didn’t take place until the composer and multi-instrumentalist was almost 30 years deep into a masterfully inventive career.

The delay was partly due to Braxton’s brief tenure on a major label distributed imprint. After emerging—in the late 1960s, as part of the first wave of artists to come from the Chicago-based Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (or AACM)—Braxton’s profile quickly went international.

Through more than a half-century, the AACM has grown from a collective of ambitious Chicago musicians to an engine of creative inspiration and practical outreach that has touched nearly all corners of modern music, offering sustenance especially to musicians steeped in jazz tradition yet unwilling to be confined by it. “Don’t give me a name,” Abrams said long ago about the word jazz, which is notably absent from the association’s name. “I’m not taking it.”

Ligeti Quartet at London’s Steiner Recital Hall Reviewed

To paraphrase Stravinsky, great composers don’t borrow, they steal. “Morphs and Magpies” was the theme of the Ligeti Quartet’s concert given at the Steiner Recital Hall in London on February 17, and the programme displayed some unrepentant thieves. This already much-praised British-based string quartet (Mandhira de Saram, violin 1; Patrick Dawkins, violin 2; Richard Jones, viola; Val Welbanks, cello) was founded in 2010. They have made their US debut, are in residence at a couple of UK universities and are supported by the City Music Foundation. Like the Kronos Quartet–their mentors and most obvious musical ancestors–they are contemporary music specialists interested in cross-genre collaborations, and this programme was an excellent showcase for their versatility.

Mr. Zorn, 64, a storied alto saxophonist and movement-builder on New York’s downtown scene, was preparing for one of the last shows at the Stone’s gruffly enchanting Alphabet City location. (It closed on Sunday.) Most artist-run spaces like this live in dog years, so the fact that the Stone has been around for 13 human ones has allowed it to achieve legendary status on New York’s cultural outlands.
