Heterodyne, Hatcher, Kirchner, Ewen in DC, December 14

On Thursday, December 14, Heterodyne returns to RhizomeDC on a bill featuring Chicago’s Gerrit Hatcher (sax) and Julian Kirchner (drums) and Houston’s Sandy Ewen (guitar).

RhizomeDC is located at 6950 Maple St NW, in DC’s Takoma Neighborhood, not far from the Takoma Metro Station.

Gerrit Hatcher //sax & Julian Kirchner //drums – (Chicago) “Improvised solo saxophone performance isn’t the kind of thing you’d expect a 26-year-old newcomer to the scene to jump into with both feet. But Gerrit Hatcher makes a convincing case that he’s ready on his new cassette, Good Weight (Amalgam), a succinct offering that keeps the focus on basic ideas. The album begins with a pair of dedications to two often overlooked heavies of the free-jazz era—fellow tenor saxophonists Frank Lowe and Frank Wright—on which Hatcher reveals a flair for motific improvisation, uncorking a richly marbled tone spiked with leaps into his instrument’s extreme upper register. The pieces reflect the way their dedicatees bridged the gap between postbop propulsion and outward-bound exploration…Each little melodic, rhythmic, or coloristic scheme flows naturally into the next, with the saxophonist moving into more tender passages as easily as he blows down walls. ” – Chicago Reader

Sandy Ewen (Houston) – has released several albums, including a duo with guitarist Tom Carter, a trio with bassist Damon Smith & drummer Weasel Walter, and a rock album with Austin’s Weird Weeds. Ewen’s visual work is closely tied to her work in sound; she uses both mediums to explore texture, composition and materials.

The performance begins at 8pm; the event is “all ages”. Although no one will be turned away for lack of funds, a $10 minimum donation is requested to help the traveling musicians cover the considerable expenses incurred in making this performance possible.

Matt Hollenberg Interview

Source: burning ambulance.

The fourth episode features an interview with guitarist Matt Hollenberg. He’s one of the most adventurous players around right now, and he’s got a lot going on. He’s a member of John Zorn‘s trio Simulacrum, along with organist John Medeski and drummer Kenny Grohowski; we interviewed all three of them a few years ago. He’s also a member of the band John Frum, with Liam Wilson of the Dillinger Escape Plan and some other underground metal folks; we reviewed their debut album earlier this year. He’s also just launched a new instrumental metal fusion project called Shardik, and his longest-running band is Cleric. They’ve been around for more than a dozen years, but they’ve only released two albums, one of which, Retrocausal, just came out. Apparently, though, they’ve got two other records in the can, one of which is entirely made up of Zorn compositions, from the Masada songbook.
