Violinist Patricia Kopatchinskaja teams up with cellist Jay Campbell for the world premiere of Michael Hersch’s … das Rückgrat berstend, on a program that showcases extreme styles of music-making by composers from Gibbons to Xenakis. The new duo for violin/speaker and cello is one of several works Kopatchinskaja has commissioned from Hersch.

Cellist Sæunn Thorsteinsdóttir, presents new works for solo cello exploring her roots in Iceland. From Vetur by Melia Watras, based on a folksong inspired by the poems of Sæunn’s great grandfather, to 48 images of the Moon by Thurídur Jónsdóttir, which includes field recordings from a secluded shore in the Westfjords of Iceland, to a brand new work by young Icelandic composer Halldór Smárason, all of the pieces have profound ties to this tiny country in the middle of the North Atlantic. Also on the program is Páll Ragnar Pálsson’s Aftershock.

BR-LASER, MSHR, AND YATTA | MOVING SOUNDS FESTIVAL
Roulette welcomes back Austrian Cultural Forum New York’s Moving Sounds Festival, an annual international festival of music, visual media and aesthetic dialogue that features emerging and pioneering artists focused on electronically generated music, engaging improvisation, and cutting edge technology. This year’s festival is co-curated by Austrian electronic arts center Ars Electronica and Brooklyn-based nonprofit technology studio Eyebeam. The opening night of the festival, taking place on Sunday, features audiovisual experimentalists BR-Laser, MSHR, and Yatta.
