Jazz in NYC This Week

Tim Berne

BROKEN SHADOWS at Korzo (Oct. 3, 9 and 10:30 p.m.). Four enchanting improvisers to have emerged in New York in the 1980s and ’90s are the alto saxophonist Tim Berne, the tenor saxophonist Chris Speed, the bassist Reid Anderson and the drummer Dave King. Now they’re a quartet called Broken Shadows, playing compositions by avant-garde jazz heroes: Ornette Coleman, Julius Hemphill, Charlie Haden and Dewey Redman.

PETER EVANS at the Stone (Oct. 3-8, 8:30 p.m.). Peter Evans plays the trumpet like a homing device, a percussion instrument, a didgeridoo, or distant bird call. He is now a heavily relied-upon sideman on New York’s avant-garde jazz scene, because he can seemingly do anything with his horn, while keeping his heart on his sleeve. But some of his most compelling work is as a soloist. He’s in residence at the Stone, where he will play with a range of collaborators and finish the run with a solo performance on Sunday, Oct. 8.

ADAM RUDOLPH’S MOVING PICTURES at the Jazz Gallery (Oct. 3-4, 7:30 and 9:30 p.m.). In Moving Pictures, an octet led by the percussionist Mr. Rudolph, the rhythms of Brazil, West Africa and the Caribbean combine in an aesthetic that recalls the various fusion sounds of the 1970s and ’80s. A seven-piece iteration of the band will appear at this concert, which celebrates the release of Moving Pictures’ new album, “Glare of the Tiger.”
