WAYWARD MUSIC SERIES

Chapel Performance Space at Good Shepherd Center

4th Floor, 4649 Sunnyside Ave. N, Seattle 98103 (corner N 50th St. in Wallingford)

Every month, Nonsequitur and a community of like-minded presenters and artists offer ten concerts of adventurous music in an informal yet respectful all-ages setting: contemporary classical, free improvisation, the outer limits of jazz, electronic music, microtonal/new instruments, sound art, and other extraordinary sonic experiences.

Evan Smith
Thu. Sep. 21, 8 PM; $5 – $15 donation at door

Seattle saxophonist Evan Smith specializes in contemporary-classical music that bridges the divide between composition and improvisation and explores the flexible sonic palette of the saxophone. For this program, he presents Yusef Lateef’s Sonata for Saxophone Quartet and Saxophone Sagacity, + quartet and sextet works of Julius Hemphill and Nat Evans.

S. Eric Scribner: Music from Tond
Fri. Sep. 22, 8 PM; $5 – $15 donation at door

As part of the setting in his series of four fantasy novels set in the world of “Tond”, writer and composer S. Eric Scribner describes the music of the Fyorian, Sherványa, and Karjan peoples. Some of that music can actually be played. Modal or microtonal, and often strongly rhythmic, it is music based on traditions everywhere but with a sense of strangeness from an invented world.

Sahba Sizdahkhani + Ivan Arteaga
Sat. Sep. 23, 8 PM; $5 – $15 donation at door

Inspired by 1960’s free-jazz and Persian traditional music, Iranian multi-instrumentalist Sahba Sizdahkhani plays 104-string santour and percussion, channeling slow, long-form compositions based on the ancient spiritual ceremony of Sama, a ritual used by Persian Sufi Dervishes to achieve a spiritual trance state. Saxophonist Ivan Arteaga performs a new solo for alto saxophone, body & space entitled Stings & Pulleys with choreographer Allison Burk.
