Things Learned at Berlin Atonal

Source: The Quietus.

The 2017 edition of Berlin Atonal is opened by Reinhold Friedl, who cuts through the gaping dark space of the Kraftwerk complex with pieces from Romanian avant-garde composers Iancu Dumitrescu and Ana-Maria Avram. Avram’s ‘Klavierutopie’ is particularly consuming, a tribute to its composer who passed away just a few weeks before the festival. It’s a privilege to hear the work here and it sets the tone for a rich programme and a extraordinary festival.

Heterodyne (with Jerry Busher, Doug Kallmeyer, Monica Stroik and Sarah Hughes) and the Welch & Oshima Duo in DC, Sept. 18

On September 18, Heterodyne (free downloads at https://goo.gl/SK7Hqz) with Doug Kallmeyer, Monica Stroik, Jerry Busher and Sarah Hughes and the Tristan Welch/Ron Oshima duo come to Arlington’s iconic Galaxy Hut.

Galaxy Hut is located at 2711 Wilson Boulevard, Arlington Virginia 22201, equidistant to Clarendon and Courthouse metro stations a few blocks away. It is a 21+ venue; admission is $5 and the music starts at 9pm.

Heterodyne is an improvisational project; its core performers are Maria Shesiuk (synthesizers and processed vocalizations) and T. A. Zook (NS Design Omni Bass, strung as a basscello). Although it is essentially a duo, when complex schedules permit, it performs with Patrick Whitehead on quarter-tone flügelhorn and trumpet; Bob Boilen on ARP synthesizer, Doug Kallmeyer on bass, Jerry Busher on drums and Sarah Hughes on saxophone.

Tristan Welch & Ron Oshima is a duo consisting of Tristan Welch on guitar and Ron Oshima on saxophone.
