The Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Reviewed

Before the postmodernist concert starts, the orchestra warming up sounds a little like Ornette Coleman or Sun Ra and his outer-spacers giving John Cage a run for his money. These sounds are free and somewhat cacophonous but they are music too, and why not, if old-school rules are made to be broken by new composers whose classical muses and sirens tease them with surprising mixtures of notes, jogged by offbeat syncopations, which question traditional melodies and rhythms and try to alert the listening brain to new ideas of the beautiful.
