ESP-Disk’ is happy to announce that we have signed pianist/composer Matthew Shipp to a two-record deal, with both albums to come out in late January 2018: the solo piano Zero and Sonic Fiction with his quartet including Michael Bisio (bass), Whit Dickey (drums) and ESP label mate Mat Walerian (saxophones, clarinets, flutes). Shipp has played on Walerian’s first three albums, all on ESP.

Early in 2016 there was a spate of press about Mr. Shipp doing his last album for Thirsty Ear, Piano Song. Though a lot of those articles riffed on the idea that Shipp was slowing down his recording schedule or would even cease to enter the studio, he did state in these articles that he had some more work to do that would be released elsewhere, and we welcome him to ESP as a leader. ESP has recorded some of the greatest pianists of our time—Ran Blake, Paul Bley, Lowell Davidson, Burton Greene, Thollem McDonas, Sun Ra, John Hicks, Dave Burrell, Stanley Cowell, Bud Powell, and more—and Shipp extends that tradition for us.
