Psychotropic Electric Eel Dream IV
April 2 – June 30, 2017
What you hear in the Fern Room is Psychotropic Electric Eel Dream IV by composer, musician, and visual artist Rob Mazurek. The sounds in this composition were generated by electric eels at the National Institute of Research and Technology in Manaus, Brazil. Mazurek recorded them between 2000 and 2008, and has since used them in several music compositions, recordings, and installations. In this iteration of the work, he combines them with analog synthesis to create an undulating and radiant sonic texture. By placing the sounds in loudspeakers overhead, our typical relationship to the eels is reversed: they are above us, not underwater, and we can imagine ourselves submerged.

5049 Records Podcast – Episode 109, Eli Keszler

Source: 5049 Records.

Eli Keszler is a wonderful and utterly unique composer, percussionist and visual artist. He studied music at the New England Conservatory and has performed with Joe McPhee, Anthony Coleman and Oren Ambarchi and many others. For this conversation we discuss Eli’s early days as a jazz head, his immersion into the world of visual art, improvisation and much much more. This is a great conversation, the kind of talk that was the impetus for this podcast. Enjoy.
